Opinions on whether crash airbags (similar to cars)would be of any benefit in light aircraft?

Lionel Tanen: There are light aircraft with airbags! The Cessna Corvallis is one, I think Cirrus has them as well as many Piper, Mooney, Diamond and others. They are built into the seat belts. A company called Amsafe http://www.amsafe.com/products-services/general-av... makes them for several GA aircraft.

Margart Stimpert: The issue has been studied closely and the professional consensus is that explosive devices are not advisable for installation in any aircraft.

Eli Trapeni: of course they would.as long as the aircraft doesnt crash in the ocean, a mountain, a building, get shot down, or explode from the gas on impact.

Colby Millberg: Terrible idea.An accidental deployment on a hard landing would make it impossible for the pilot to maintain control during roll-out. There's too much chance of turning a bad landing into a post-landing crash, and too small a performance envelope where it might do some good.
