Dick Baumgarten: Alternative medicine works; it help my husband when he was battling cancer. But they don't work has fast as "medicines" work; also you have to take them for a longer period of time. Alternative medicine is not regulated by the FDA (some may be) therefor we are not really sure the quantity that is needed for therapeutic uses. Some of the don't, but some of them do, and some o! f them result in new medical applications. Traditional doctors frowned on these things because a lot of what was going on they knew to be ineffective even if they might not know the exact reason. The compounds isolated out of plant medicines now are amazing - tobacco is being used to grow anthrax anti-toxin! Donnell Nocella: Doctors get paid bonuses if they sell a certain amount of a drug. For instance, in a short term care center I worked at I would notice the company that makes the pens used by the doctors that time of year was also the main drug they'd be prescribing to their patients. $$$

Chemically engineered medicines all have adverse side effects (pay close attention to ads on TV for various meds)...some of the side effects are worse, and even more dangerous than the ailment itself. Frank Crummell: There is a well-known story of a physician who advocated antioxidants before it was as popular as it is now. He was speaking to a group of physicians. He asked them how many recommended Vitamin E to their patients. Very few raised their hands. He then asked how many took Vitamin E themselves. Almost all of them raised their hands.Believe me, many traditional medicine physicians do use ! them privately but they can't recommend it because the AMA would censure them.
